New CD/DVD players and CDRs

I've noticed that some of the new cd or dvd players that are not expressily marked as multiread will not read cdrs. I would exclude a detection of weird tracks as they work fine with old original cds. I would guess that it may be simply a support detection based on the different refraction properties of cdrs compared to pressed CDs. I was wondering if anyone had experimented either with different CD brands or by playing around with the laser intensity setting and had obtained some results.
