First you need to have you PS2 chipped and have a boot disk such as Region X or Action Replay 2.
To backup a disk try something like Tekken Tag or Silent Scope first.
You need one of the following writing programs Clonecd, Nero Burning Rom, Cdrwin.
The best media to use for writing is Verbatim.
Once you have all these things goto www.psxcopyworld.co.uk
and check out the tutorials section. I would recommend using Nero Burning Rom as I have had most success with this using the above mentioned guide. Nero Burning Rom can be downloaded as a demo from Nero's site just do a search for it it altavista.
Hope this gives you a starting point
Leave a message if you are having problems and someone will advise you

Great post Sim, im just gonna add a few addons if thats alright!!!!

Dont forget for infomation on mods and boot cds for the PS2 check out www.playstationmods.com or www.kanection.co.uk

Also make sure the burner you are using or gonna buy soon is CLONE CD and CDR-Win compatible, or NERO (dont like it, i use clone cd 100% reliability for me)

But anyway if you need anymore info like Sim says just post and were all help you out.

Goodluck on your quest to making your first backup.

A bit more advice to add.
1/
A modchip allows you to play imports (as backups). Thus if you take a Jap original game (NTSC) and copy it with CLONECD, and if you have a PAL TV, chances are that the game will play in black and white or roll. In such cases an NTSC to PAL convertor is required OR you will have to use CDR-WIN (instead of CLONECD) to copy the game to hard disk; then you patch it for PAL with a patch identified at megagames.com; then you write it back to a CD-R.

2/
Please note that DVD games don't copy as for CDs. The software isn't available yet. Search the forum on DVD RIP for advice on what to do if you must copy DVD games.

Good luck.

Hi,

Easy cd has to be one of the worst copyimg programs i have ever used. Download a trial version of clonecd or cdr-win to make your backups.

For tutorials on how to use the writer software mentioned above check out DEANOS website www.psxcopyworld.co.uk

and yes you will also need a game shark or REGION X to boot your backups

Cheers

Dal

Hi Devonne,

I provided the below comprehensive reply to two other people over the past two days. You will need a modchip for your PS2, copying software and the right PC hardware for the job. I recommend the Yamaha 2100S (or E) CD-RW for optimum caompatibility for read and write with the recommended copying software.

Go to http://www.megagames.com and http://www.psxcopyworld.co.uk to get detailed advice. The basic principles are as follows:
1/
You will need to get the PS2 chipped to allow backups to play. Go to the website http://www.playstationmods.com from where you can buy a mod. An internal mod is recommended and if you live in the UK, they'll do it for you if you are not a soldering whizzo.

2/
You will then need copying software and patching software. I recommend just two programs: they are CLONECD and CDR-WIN. The former makes 1:1 copies (you'll need the tutorial from one of the above mentioned sites). Thus if you have an unprotected game (megagames.com lists games for which there are patches and the type of patch required) and if the game is of the same denomination as your PS2 (e.g. PAL), CLONECD does the job perfectly. CDR-WIN stages the CD copy to your PC's hard disk so that you can patch the game as necessary (per PPF-O-MATIC.EXE downloaded from megagames.com together with the patches); then you burn the game back to the CD with CDR-Win.

3/
For the above to work properly, your CD-R MUST be compatible with the burning programs. The sites from which you download the programs list the compatible devices.

4/
If you copy games from one TV standard (like NTSC) to play on another standard (like PAL) then the game may or may not play in colour. There are patches to change this or you could buy a convertor that sits between your TV and the PS2. I have one of these because I hate patching and the patches don't always work.

5/
Your biggest challenges will be DVD games and Protected Games. DVD games can't be easily backed up at present (search this forum under the keyword DVD RIP). Protected games are likely to be an increasing issue. Megagames.com is usually on the ball here but for EA games, go to http://www.eapatcher.com

This forum has nearly 18,000 subscribers. I'd bet that the bulk of them started off like you. It's not that difficult when you've done it once, especially with CloneCD.

Good luck and I hope this reply has been helpful.
