grand turisomo 3 and other dvd rom ps2 questions

can you help me out boys/girls right i have just got a chipped ps2 with a dvd region x so i can play backups but and here is the question.
can i back up ps2 dvd rom discs the same way as the normal discs. the discs with the blue backs seem to be ok at backing up but the silver dvd rom discs my cd rom wont read them. now i know what you going to say get a dvd rom drive but my burnner is not a dvd burner so will i have to replace it to to make back ups with the silver backs.
any info on this would be good as i dont really want to pay £40 for a game.

Sorry - unless you want to get into DVD Ripping (search on this theme), £40 a DVD game it is for now and until a CLONECD equivalent arrives. Then there's between £600 & £2,500 for a DVD-ROM ......
