DVD+R or DVD-R?

Hi, I have a PS2 model 39000 and I was wondering which type of DVD, a DVD+R or DVD-R, will play on it. I was thinking of copying or making DVD movies and I read that the older model PS2's will only play either a DVD+R or a DVD-R but I couldn't remember which one it was. Also, I don't have a mod chip in my PS2 and don't plan to get one. This is strictly only for playing DVD movies.

Which type of DVD, DVD+R or DVD-R, will play on the old model PS2? Thanks for answering my question in advance.

Your ps2 should boot either + or -. So it doesnt matter to you, but for other ps2s - is highest ranking.

Also it ain't just a case of whether yr ps2 will play them or not but how much strain yr puttin on the laser by playin them.

Definitely a dark write surface dvd-r for anything goin in yr ps2 m8.

Ottoman is right. Some media can be a bit heavy on the laser, but generally I think from about V4 PS2's upward they can read both DVD's and the +R's.
I think the trick is to get a job that pays so much money you just buy any game you want, when you want. and hey if it gets damaged..... Go get another one!

Cool. I'll keep all this advice in mind. Thanks for the help.

Also, in regards to media......any recommendations to what kind of media to use? I've always been biased towards TDK for CD-R's cuz they're a really good brand. I would assume TDK is also a good brand for DVD-R's, but that's just my logic. What do you guys recommend?

Thanks for the fast response.

How much do Riteks usually cost? CompUSA has a special sale this week where you can buy 15 TDK DVD+/-R's for $20. I think that's a pretty good deal.

Cool. That's actually pretty cheap. And I just read in another post that they've actually dropped to like $74 for 100 Riteks.

Well, I just picked up some blank TDK DVD's over at CompUSA. A 15 pack of 4x DVD+R's and a 15 pack of 2x DVD-R's, all for $45 total (after tax). I don't think that's a bad price.

Based on reading several reviews of different DVD burners, I also just picked up a Sony DRU-510A DVD+/-RW drive. It should be a really good burner.

Also, when I was buying my blank DVD's I noticed there was only one 15 pack of TDK DVD+R's left, while there were quite a few left of the DVD-R's. This gave me the impression that DVD+R's are a little better?

Which format of DVD's is better for making copies of movies?
And also, which is better for the PS2 lens laser (lesser strain)? A darker write surface or a lighter write surface? I didn't quite catch this one earlier...

Again, thanks in advance for answering my questions.

Either format will back up movies no problem but u might find that if u wanna play the backups in other dvd players dvd-r will work on more.

Definitely dark write surface is the way ahead for ps2 stuff.

Thanks Ottoman. That's helpful to know. And I just read in a website from the link that EVO provided that DVD-R's are 97% compatibale, whereas DVD+R's are 86% compatible.

I wonder....if everyone here rants so much that Riteks are really the best brand to go with (BeAll DVD's are also very good, according to the website link posted by EVO).....how come normal retail stores don't carry them? (Unless if I'm not looking hard enough.) They SHOULD carry them if they're a good brand.
