PPF Question

This may seem like a stupid questrion, but hey, I'm new...
How do you know if a PSX backup needs a PPF patch or not???

GLH is on a distinguished road
You have to choise:

1.
- make an image from the cd to harddrive
- burn it
- if it work -> you don't need a ppf-Patch
- if not try searching for a ppf-Patch

2.
- before burning the image to cd-r search if a ppf-Patch is available
- when not available -> try burning it
- when a ppf-Patch is available use it and then burn it
