Whats the best way to set these 2 up?

I have a Lite-on dvd and a Freecom cd-rw. I want to install them in my computer . What is the best way? you know, what ide, wich one is master, wich one is slave, that sort of thing.
I have been looking around the forums trying to find the best dvd copying utility that even the hopeless and the brain dead like me can use. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Well i have my cdrw on master and my DVD on Slave.

For the software, do you mean copy to the HDD?
