"Is a software layer which allows communication between all kinds of software (applications, drivers, etc.) and your peripheral devices. The ASPI layer was created for SCSI devices, but later on the interface was adopted for other NON-SCSI bus types Many applications require the ASPI layers for communication with peripheral devices, such as CD-Rom's or CD-Writers. The Windows 95 and 98 versions have an outdated ASPI layer, Windows NT and 2000 come without the ASPI layer. So it is recommended to update your ASPI layers."

You can use Force ASPI to make sure you have the correct ASPI layer.
