Well I tried making a copy of the play disc just for the heck of it. I used a recent version of CloneCD to rip to the hard drive (with subchannel data) - there were numerous unreadable sectors starting about 90% into the disk. I then burned it back to a disk using RAW SAO+SUB (I could have used RAW DAO instead, but I don't think it would be any more likely to work).
When I tried to run the game with the disk in either my CDROM or CDRW drives, it could tell it was a copy (the game logo would disappear after a few seconds). However, I ran Daemon Tools and enabled Securom emulation mode and the game loaded fine. So if you have copies that aren't working for you, you might want to try using Daemon Tools to get them working - it's a better option than cracks because you're using the original EXE for the game, plus you don't have to wait for a new crack whenever a new patch comes out.
Of course, another option is to use the original play disc to start the game on all computers, since (if you do a full install) it doesn't read the disc anymore after you start the game (I tested it and it works).
