The shop was right; it is the best way to connect your pc - for the shop! You see, to cut costs down they've connected both your cd-rom and your writer to the same cable, instead of connecting them the CORRECT way using TWO cables..
Connect your system as follows:
Primary IDE port: master = hard-drive (C:\)
slave = not used or additional hard-drive
secondary IDE port: master = cd-rom
slave = writer
Once connected you need to enter you BIOS setup and auto-detect your drives again. Make sure the correct DMA modes are used for each drive - inclusding your hard-drive, ie my Traxdata writer is a mode 4 device.
Also, you'll need to ##### that DMA is enabled for all your drives (right-click My Computer icon, then click on the Device Manager tab). The reason you'll need to re-enable the DMA feature is because some older cd-roms don't support DMA, but new one's have no problem. Also diable the auto-insertion notification, as this can interfere with your copying.
Finally, CloneCD is good at doing 100% copies (even some protected stuff), but you need compatible drives to do it justice (you can always install it and look in the help file, under Hardware requirements).
