I don't use blue discs because they don't work on my Dreamcast. I use the lighter silver or champagne (pale green) colored discs and they work just fine.
The backup discs are going to spin faster and for longer than the original Dreamcast GD-ROM discs, because the data isn't as tightly compressed (not compressed at all!). A GD-ROM holds a gigabyte of data in the same space that a standard CD-R holds 650-700 mb. This means for the same amount of read-time with the same disc RPM, a CD-R will impart only about two-thirds of the data that a GD-ROM will. This means to get the same data-rate as a GD-ROM, the disc must spin longer and I would imagine it would also spin at a faster rate too (if it's a multi-speed drive).
