More clearing up....
Red_Sed2000 is perfectly correct....
Firmware is the controler software for a device. It is written on a flash rom and can be updated with a flash program to correct bugs in the controller software or to improve performance of a device.
Basicaly you burner has a rom chip inside containing the controler software or firmware
An ASPI layer consists of four files that 'lie between' various programs [software] and certain devices, such as CD-ROM drives and burners [hardware].
Operating systems and programs use ASPI drivers to communicate with SCSI devices. But many people don't realize that the files contained in an ASPI layer are also used in systems that *don't* contain a SCSI adapter, or SCSI devices .. for things such as ripping CD audio and burning CDs, which is why you'll find ASPI-related files posted on the Download pages at sites such as FireBurner, CDRWin, Nero, & Feurio.
Anyway i think this post has gone off the original line abit now.
