Imation/3M used to market excellent quality discs. You can still find some of these old Imations if you're lucky, but the bulk of what you'll see on department store shelves, etc., will be new CMC Magnetics Corp. made Imation.

To tell the difference between the new Imations and the old Imations, look at the packaging. On the "U-Card" on the back of the jewel case, if on somewhere it says "Copyright, 1998, Imation" or earlier, then you've got yourself a good quality Imation. Also, look for "Made in Japan" or "Made in USA" as opposed to "Made in Taiwan". The Japanese product was of AAA+ class quality.

On the 8x-Compatible CD-Rs, look on the front index card of the CD for "8x-Certified" as opposed to "8x". This also signifies a Japanese CD-R. The Japanese product was manufactured by Taiyo Yuden Co. Ltd.

Most 12x-Comptible and all the 16x-Compatible Imations these days are made by CMC in Taiwan and quality can vary with every shipment. I have personally never had a problem with CMC Golds, but I've had numerous problems with CMC Blues (a.k.a. Imation 4x-Compatible, Taiwan, Imation 8x-Compatible, Taiwan).

Good Luck,
