You mean format it using Direct CD? Because normally you cannot format a blank cd-r; you can only wite to it as and when you're burning files. To continue burning you have to make usre you leave the "session" open so that when you come to burn to the disk again you will be able to continue. This is what is known as a "multi-session disk".

CD-R disks cannot be formatted like a floppy disk or a hard drive - unless you use specific software.
