Well probably the .avi file is not good (did you download it?)
And if the avi file is badly made that means tha you should fix it yourself. Do you really want to get into that trouble?

Did you try playing the movie onto another pc?

Is your computer old ? or equiped with a bad grafics card?
these could be some other reasons for your problem.

you could always try to update your grafics card drivers or try another player? bsplayer is pretty good.
