I agree the USB mod is not the best chip by far but you shouldnt have to go through all the crap you described to play PSX backups. You should be able to power the ps2 up by pressing eject, insert PSX backup, turn on chip, press reset once and PSX backup should load. I used a USB mod for months and had no trouble loading anything except dvd-r games. I use a Sony CRX-175E2 cdrw, I use only verbatim cdr's with clone cd 3.0.7.2 along with CDRWIN 3.8e (Fully licensed software) and ppf-o-matic when patching is required. Read at 8x copy at 4x. Like Charlie stated, the backups you purchased are probally crap
