thats a simple calculation

single speed write/read means 150 kilobyte datastream per second

1024 kb = 1 mb

a full 700 mb cd with single speed takes...

calculation:
700 x 1024 = 716800 kb
716800 / 150 = 4778,7 s
4778,7 / 60 = 79,7 min

thats why on a 700er mb recordable disk always "80 mins" is printed on

so if you want to know how your drive should need to burn it simply do

burning speed: x = 8

80 / 8 = 10 mins

but that not all, this was the burning process only... the reading process is quite similiar except the speed is higher if u dont burn "on the fly", else the reading speed is (or should be, sometimes it isnt exactly as high as the burning speed.

but in most situations a cd burned from the harddisk does a better job.

hope this helped you

Jimmy
