I'm so sorry. I wanted to edit this post and delete another, pushed the wrong button... One too many forums opened simultaneously + very tired.

I didn't know that records.ini is missing and is necessary
Was using DiskSpan GUI on Windows 7, it would compress just fine, then give me an error which I ignored (dumb me), unaware that the records.ini is not being created...
Switched to Windows 10 and it worked flawlessly.
