Trainers are a very good way to learn hacking and assembly programming. Or, at least, it was back in the times of microcomputers when it was realtively easy: I made trainers for several games on the Commodore C64. But it's not the pinnacle of programming; moving on to programming embedded systems in assembly and/or C or system application programming in C/C++ may be a good idea but not while creating trainers is still fun!
