I've done some more looking around and found this:

A perfect copy of the DVD can be made (he used a Pioneer DVR-S201 DVD-RAM drive). However, there is a problem with booting. The GS/AR boot method doesn't work because it uses CD media, not DVD.

Anyway, if the game was booted using the original DVD and then swaped with the backup, the game runs with no problems.

I have never tried this so I can't personally say if this is true. I did see it posted somewhere else. It looks like there are alot of other people doing research as well.
