Check out
http://www.digitalfaq.com/reviews/dvd-media.htm. Some DVD's are not as high quality as one would expect from their brand. Not necessarily fakes, "only" the brand choosing a shit manufacturer. E.g. it is just a waste of money to buy TDK DVD's which have been (one of) the best brand until a few years ago when TDK stopped manufacturing them itself. I've seen such "instant write crashes" several times with my recent TDK DVD's, especially on my dad's PC, although this was A) random or B) consistent through up to half a dozen tries but not C) always every second.
I suggest getting a Pioneer drive and Verbatim media.
