I'll tell you why!
Firstly you must realise that some people a running machines that a fairly slow in comparison to todays modern systems, others have writers that wont burn at higher speeds anyway and some choose to use cheap unbranded and not so reliable cdrs.
I personally recommend a read speed of 4x and a write speed of 2x and have set this configuration up on systems as slow as 90mhz without any probs.
Despite the above mentioned reasons you can reduce errors in audio and fmv sequences by reducing your write speed especially when using cheap cdr's, 2x is perfect as thats basically what a PSX is, a 2x glourified cdrom drive.
