1) I'm not sure, but i think u need a chip to play games that have more than 1 disc unless you can find a patch that will fix the problem.
2) A patch changes the discs code and usually alters the copy protection from the disc. To do this you create a .bin image of the disk and save it to your hard drive. Use PPF-O-MATIC to apply the patch and then burn it onto a blank disc.
There are other types of patches known as selectors (which let you choose whether u r playing the game on a PAL or NTSC machine) or trailers (which are small intros by the hacking group that made the patch, and usually contain cheats for the game).
You can get both the PPF-O-MATIC and patches from www.megagames.com under the playstation section ...
here is a direct link to the patches page:

and a link to where you can download the PPF-O-MATIC:

3) Yes you can play ps2 games without a modchip, using the swap trick. The tutorial is here:
http://www.megagames.com/ps2/ps2swap/index.shtml
and you can get the patches you will need in order for the ps2 backup games to work from here:

I think thats everything u wanted, so if u'll excuse me i think i'll go back to bed, i'm kinda tired
