If your mainboard has an intel chipset then install Intel "Chipset Software Installation Utility" which you can download from intel.com:

These drivers also update the IDE/SATA driver which most liley malfunctions, else it could be a hardware related problem then try to connect the drive to a different IDE or SATA port
For a VIA chipset there are similar drivers available
