I have a 6 wire mod chip on a PS-one, which is the same as a 7 wire on a traditional PSX. I have never needed a boot-disk to play a backup, only an import.
On a seven wire chip the 3 extra wires connect to the power switch, the reset switch and the door switch, injecting the correct code on activation. The PS-one only needs a 6 wire mod because there is no reset switch ! it is of course "combined" with the power switch.
