Because of improperly written, buggy software, this can happen with any other game, too. (I've had it happen to me with Terminator: Future Shock and Deus Ex: Invisible War, both of which are otherwise very stable.) Solution: have, at least, two savegames and overwrite them with the new save alternately; also, backup savegames often, e.g. daily. You can spare a lot of annoyance with these...
