Your machine is sensitive to what type of disc you use, the older machines will not play every type/make of disc that is on the market. I have found the old machines seem to prefer the gold type disc, I put a mod chip in a machine the same as yours yesterday and it would only read games copied with Nero(cdrwin & Clone CD failed), I live in Australia so I am not sure what type of discs you can get.
One of the problems with your machine is the power source is located directly under the laser and the heat from this will effect your machine.
1) try different discs
2)try your copies on some one elses machine
3)If you buy a new machine only the Japanese PS2 can be mod chiped and the PS1 needs games to be patched to country origin
Before you decide on buying new playstation, check if your copy of game is right. Just put the disk in you pc and see if you see any contain inside the disc. if you can't see any thing from te explorer then it is your disk problem, mainly due to software. If you can see contain of you cd in explorer, then it is you PSX's problem. Even if it is your PSX problem ,I don't think you don't have to buy a brand new PSX. There is site which sell just the laser head of the playstation. you just need to search for it.
