In your example, if all those lots of visitors only visit the site because it's free then they won't buy anything from the advertised sponsors either. So, in the long run, those people running the site won't win anything with making their downloads free. And advertisers are indirect money, as opposed to direct money coming from their own customers.
You don't have the right to tell people to give away their software for free. You do have the right to find a free alternative or create your own instead, though, or not use such software at all. I do believe in free software and I do give away mine for free but I'm an author and you're a user so our attitude cannot be compared...
