As long as the wires are short and don't cross too much you should be perfectly OK... as long as they aren't like spaghetti, you should be fine. 
The one in my avatar is a v14 Crystal v1.1 I did a couple of weeks back. 
Not heard of the 1k resistor trick... let us know how it goes.
