By the way, of course,
Nethack is more or less still alive!
Also, there's a similar game (the Windows remake of the C64 original):
Sword of Fargoal (random generated levels, very high replay value!!!), which my sister's boyfriend has been spending hours playing with!
Furthermore, if you like such retro-style, out-of-current-main-stream, adventure-action-puzzle-roleplay-strategy-all-in-one games, try Colobot (and its sequel, CeeBot) and Darwinia, too.
