OK, I solved the CAL/CIF error I was having!
It was due to me previously installing this on my C: drive then uninstalling and reinstalling on my D: drive which left a 'game.ini' file from the previous install still in 'My Documents\The Creature of Kapu Cave\'. Deleting that file allowed the game to launch properly!
Seems the uninstaller didn't delete all files and the new install picked up the old game.ini and was looking on C: for the CIF file when I'd re-installed it on D:
