Nope, it is the
publisher that pushes the software onto the market as soon as possible. For the developer's, the software is their child; do you think they like a premature birth, with all the usual complications?!

Sorry, DOOM had quite a couple of patches, mainly with online play and modem configuration. Actually, bugfree releases go back into the days when
there was no way to patch games because A) there was no Internet, or any easy-to-access world wide network from which any user could get any patch for any game or B) the game was/is run from a read-only media. That's microcomputers in the 80's (don't wanna mention names because I am majorly biased: visit my homepage

) and, of course, all kinds of consoles (even today).
