Apparently, on some systems the game engine gets confused and thinks it's running a vanilla AvP and causes problems. When you rename the executable the engine recognizes that it's AvP gold and the problems go away.
I should know, it took me days to find about this issue and get my copy of AvP to work
. Also tested the fix by unistalling and reinstalling the game a couple of times - it worked everytime.
