If you have the right Cd writer you can use CD clone to make backups wothout the need for a patch by selecting read sub chanels and write without repairing. You will always need to patch a proteced game if you use Cdrwin. So as long as you have the writer (New Plextor is a good one) then CD clone is probably better. If you need to patch then CDrwin is better although you can patch IMG files created by CD clone aswell.
I have backed up the illusive Spyro3 with CD clone and I did not need to patch. If i use CDrwin to make a copy of that backup it dont work unless its patched.

I'd like to know if there is difference between an LC proteced game a Antimod chip protected game. If a game can really check to see if there is a modchip then even CD clone copies will crash and presumable originals too, cos you still got the modchip. Or does the game really just check the CD in which case its just another LC protection (spyro3). My whole point is that if it really check for a modchip then surely we will still need to patch even if we use CD clone.
I have seen these 6 wire stealth chip which apparently are undectectable to anti mod chip games but if the theory that the modchip is not really checked is correct then its jst a way of getting more money for the chip.
What we need is a game that is quite obviously antimodchip protected if CD clone can back it up and it plays on a 4 wire chipped PSX then that will confirm the theory that the chip is not really checked at all.
