Java is very nice: easy to learn and remarkably fast, much-much better than I expected!) Yeah, Visual BASIC is nice for little stuff - although I certainly prefer small C programs (mainly general-use pipe stages, like the GNU utilities) and/or batch files for scripting and automizing frequently used procedures, because that is more general than Windows-only Visual BASIC and also easier to edit, compile and run - but for large programs, ehhh...
