Games with the DOOM 3 engine (DOOM 3, Quake 4) were easily hacked to work with Windows 98 because the engine wasn't really designed to work with Windows 2000/XP only. However, most other engines are bound to Windows 2000/XP via too many operating system function calls that it would be very, very hard to hack them to work with good old Windows 98.
(And, if you ask me, I was very much against installing Windows XP, as - being also a Commodore fan - I'm not into always using the latest technology blindly. I did install Windows XP, though, about a yeard and a half ago, and, after having configured it to my needs, I tell you it's just as usable as Windows 98 AND it's much, much more stable, too! I suggest you also upgrade.)
