PS2 games are on either CD or DVD depending on the game. So far, most games are on CD. These can be backed up fairly easily. You have to find the patch for the specific game you want to back up, then just make an image to your hard drive using CDRWin, apply the patch, then burn it.

However, you also need a mod chip and the original PS2 utility disc. As of right now, mod chips are only available for Jap PS2's and only Jap PS2's come with the utility disc.

To play the backup, you insert the utility disc into your modded Jap PS2. It will eject in a few seconds, then take it out and insert the back up. Then it will play the back up.

As for American PS2's, you will have to wait for a mod chip for the American PS2. But it will most likely work in the same manner. Since American PS2's don't come with a utility disc, you will have to use an original PS2 game to swap with instead of the utility disc.
