Well unfortunately, it is read read and read again and try to understand it.
Things grow in complicity, you can start with something easy like a simple cd-check and work your way up.
But knowing ASM in its entirety or close to it is a great start, since you will be debugging alot, it will help to know what the hell is going on.
If you check here, look at all thread from the start, I did 3 tuts to give you the main basics of ASM and what they are etc. And a few tutorials on trainers and how to inject code etc. Worth the read.
Again read read read again until it sinks in. It wont happen over night but it will eventually happen.
