Upgrading the operating system? Well, just install the new version over the old one; or install the new version to another partition and copy the configuration files of all applications from the old partition to the new one...
Oh, we're talking about Windows, not Linux?
Sorry, no luck then, you'll have to start again and reinstall and reconfigure all applications until you get back to your favorite environment. Annoyed? Thank Micro$oft!
