there are mini dvd-r discs being sold on the internet,
so with a dvd-rewriter theoretically it should be possible providing that someone eventually brings out a chip similar to the ps2 to bypass copy protection and let dvd-r media play on the console.............reply if anyone knows anything.

No, it is not possible to backup an original GC disc using a DVD writer/reader so far. To backup YOUR original games you need to modchip your cube and the broadband adapter to rip your original discs from the cube to your PC using a network cable. Then you can burn'em to a mini DVD-R (Ridata are highly recommended).
However there is a new Viper modchip which does not require the broadband adapter. It can rip games using an USB cable connected from the cube modchip to your PC.
