Try this, check the jumpers for your harddrive..
Some makes have this stupid master/slave/CS set
Instead of being straight forward master or slave, they have single drive, Master with slave, etc... Really stupid :P
So make sure it isnt Master With Slave or similar, and just set it to Master/Single only
