Well that depends on what you get, even though there are non-divx .avi files, I doubt anyone would make encodes out of them. DivX does happen to be a highly-set movie standard and I dont see any reason why someone would use avi without taking advantage of divx coding. The files you found on KaZaA (or Morpheus for that matter) are most likely divx and the dreamcast wont boot them since it needs a codec that it cannot get. So my best advice is for you to stick to .mpg's and .asf's. Here is the GypPlay list of supported files just for you to be sure:
.mpg (MPEG-1 only)
.mpeg (MPEG-1 only)
.dat (MPEG-1 only)
.avi (no odd codecs!)
.m1v (MPEG-1 video, no audio)
.asf (no odd codecs! MPEG-4/DivX is NOT supported!)
.sfd (v1.01 SFD format works, but no audio. Newer SFDs not supported.)
