Back in the DOS days, on a single floppy disk drive PC, drive B: was a "phantom mirror" of drive A: in case some software insisted on accessing the only floppy disk drive via letter B:. Then you got an error message "Please, insert disk into drive B:" or similar to which you simply replied "Retry" or similar and, from then on, your only floppy disk drive was called drive B: and drive A: became the phantom mirror. If a software accessed drive A:, the same occurred the other way around.

Under Windows, the phantom floppy disk drive B: doesn't exist anymore but its drive letter is reserved, unless you explicitly assign letter B: to some drive: a hard disk, CD/DVD-ROM, RAM disk, USB flash drive, network drive etc...
