I think the protection randomly checks the first 10000 sectors. For example, a 25 meg mini image from securom works most of the time, and a 8-10 meg one for safedisc is also good. But the key is getting it as small as you can

This conclusion came from a lot of expirimentation with both protections. Sometimes, it even checks game data, but only the beginning.
