Are you using the nVidia IDE drivers or the Microsoft ones? Check that out and switch to Microsoft if you are using the nVidia ones.
They are well-known for being buggy and bad.
Right click my computer -> select settings (or whatever the one furthest down is named on english XP) -> select the 3rd tab on the lower line of tabs -> choose the one that shows all hardware installed whatever it is named something like Device Manager -> Double click IDE ATA/ATAPI... -> double click Primary IDE-channel -> Select the drivers tab and see if it says Microsoft or nVidia.
Note: some names might not be correct as I do not remember the names of english XP (using swedish here).
