Well actually I do it all the time! Renting a game before I purchase it saves me a lot of money as I do not waste money purchasing a game I do not like! A rental games gives me a better idea of how the game will play, better than a demo would.
And imagine how horrified I would be if I purchased a Starforce protected game!!! At least by renting it first I can scan for the protection, if it has starforce as the protection then my local game shop will allow me to swap it for another game. I know the owners of the shop very well, and they know how much I dislike starforce so therefore they know the game has not been installed onto my system!
My local game rental shop also allows me to rent a game and then if I decide to buy that same game then they will take what I paid to rent it off the final purchase price! So it is a very safe way to purchase a game.
And for the record, I finished the single player mode of UT2004 in less than 8 hours!! But I still purchased the game the very next day as I still believe it is an awesome game.
And that is why there are rental shops!
