I had the exact same problem only I wouldn't get as far as you did. I looked all over the internet and I didn't find a thing on this subject, but I found a way to fix it. Right click on my computer and go into your device manager. Then choose ports and choose the comm port you have the DC to PC cable connected to. Then double click it. Then choose the port settings tab, then click on advanced. On the Recieve and Transfer sliders move them all the way to the left. This fixed my little communication problem with my dreamcast. Before I did this it would rip about 400 kb - 4mb if I was lucky and then stop. Now I have had my DC ripping since late yesterday and we are still going strong. E-mail me if this helps.
