The new slimies were plagued with laser issues also.. I'm not sure if they've worked it out or not up at sony dumbquarters.. Eh.. You'll find most of us here keep our eyes out for V7's. They seem to be pretty reliable (although there is an acception to every situation). Ebay is a pretty good place to look for em.. You'll find people selling them often know their value and will post the version number 39001 or just plain old V7 in their title or description.
Don't pay too much though.

Lasers are still a bit pricey.. A new one installed (quoting spedmetal) is about 80 bucks. So thats more than half the price of a new retail slimline. I'm at odds with this issue right now.. I think i'm just gonna buy a spare hard drive and use it as a hard drive loader only machine.. Since I have a working V7 with an infinity chip. The dead laser machine is a v9 which i've already spent too much money in repairing.
