Windows 98SE supports WDM-style drivers. Many pieces of optional hardware have WDM-style drivers only, not the old VXD-style ones. E.g. I would be unable to use my Sound Blaster Audigy 2 under Windows 98 (Gold Edition), only XP...
(Therefore, I use the SB Audigy 1 instead and keep the 2 on the shelf, unused...
)
