Hey Game Maker,
Update 1.1 of GTA3 gets rid of the copy protection, only a simple CD check remains. I suggest that you do the backup onto CD-RW's or mount the backup image into Alcohol 120%/Daemon Tools, update your game to 1.1, and see if the game works off your backup. If it does, well done!
