Verbatim are very strange! Despite everyone on the forum raving about how good they are have tried several times with them and found them hopeless. Very jumpy / skippy if they work at all.
Try using Gitek g04 4X or Traxdata 4X. The later riteks do seem to be a bit unstable but if you can get hold of earlier 4X ones they are excellent.
As for why so many people have sucess with Verbatim....I don't know. Perhaps they use several different dyes and we have the wrong ones.
